People of all tribes, nations, languages....

I enjoy learning about different cultures from around the world. Sometimes, we forget to see those right in front of us. So, I thought I would look at Native Americans. When growing up we always watched, cowboys and Indians. The Lone Ranger and Tonto, John Wayne movies, ect. But these movies were strictly entertainment and really did not have substance as to reality.

Living in Arizona brought me closer to Indians, but still I did not learn alot about their culture. Some movies I have enjoyed that gave more of an Indian viewpoint are:

While I am not a Kevin Costner fan, I did enjoy this movie. Espeically found interesting the character, "Stands with Fists"

I really enjoyed the romantic feel of this fiction story of living amongst an Indian tribe.

"Last of the Mohicans" was an excellent movie and I thought very well done. If you have not read the book, you may want to. I felt it was more realistic than any of the previously mentioned movies, but still it was through a white man's eyes.

Smoke Signals was written, produced and acted by real Indians. This film finally gave me the insight I was looking for. Yes, a small look into the real culture of our modern Native American neighbors. What though is their history and origin? What do they believe? For answers to many of these questions I found a link that you too may enjoy.

I played basketball with Navajo girls from the reservation in Arizona. It was interesting interacting with this culture.

As a RN in AZ we learned alot about the "native American Culture". I respect them. I have several Navajo friends, and co-workers. I also went to Window Rock, and stayed with a Navajo Family , in 1971. Simple, Interesting, and Beautiful.
